Decision 4: Tips for choosing a craps table
with a better chance of winning If
you prefer the high intensity and the excitement of craps to the more casual
atmosphere of the blackjack table, I recommend sticking to pass line bets with
odds and making one or two come bets. I’ll
explain these bets below. Tip
1: Understand the rudiments of the
game – A short lesson on how to play Let
me take the mystery out of casino craps because it’s actually a simple game to
play. It’s really two games in
one. Let’s start with a bet on
the pass line and call that “Game 1.” In
“Game 1,” the shooter’s first roll when it’s his turn to throw the dice
is called the “come out” roll – a 7 or 11 wins even money and a 2, 3 or 12
loses your pass line bet. “Game 2” begins when a point number is rolled – a 4, 5,
6, 8, 9, or 10. To win, the shooter
must continue throwing until he throws his point number and wins (even money) or
throws a 7 and loses. When a
“7-out” occurs, the dice move to the next shooter. Craps
is that simple. I
recommend that you bet with the shooter and make a pass line bet.
The casino odds against you are slightly less if you bet the “Don’t
Pass” instead of pass, but that would not be as much fun as most players bet
with the shooter and then root for him or her to roll the point and win.
Tip
2: For more action on this shooter,
make a Come Bet If
you want more action on this shooter, make a bet on the come by placing it on
the long rectangle in front of the dealers with “COME” clearly marked.
This bet works exactly like the pass line bet except that you can make it
any time; i.e., a 7 or 11 wins and 2, 3 or 12 loses.
If
a point number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10) is rolled, the dealer moves your Come Bet to
the inside of the Box containing the number thrown. If
you throw a 5, for example, your bet moves from the Come Rectangle to the 5 Box
and in a spot on the box corresponding to where you are standing at the table.
Be
sure to keep track of your Come Bets and pick them up when you win; ask the
dealer to help you keep track if you do forget. I
recommend that you “take the odds” on both pass line and come bets.
Ask the dealers for help in making this bet or refer to Casino
Gambling, Page 107. Tip
3: Do not make Proposition Bets Don’t
be tempted to play the high house percentage proposition bets in the middle of
the craps table layout. Responding
to the stick man’s exhortation of “Who wants the Yo (eleven) – get your
bets in now!” will quickly dissipate any win you might accumulate! Craps
appears complicated, but actually is a simple game to learn.
The basics of the bets mentioned above, and much more, including how to
set and control the dice (see Tip 5 below), can be found in Casino Gambling. Tip
4: Table Selection – C.R.A.P.S. The
C.R.A.P.S. acronym will be helpful in choosing a table to play: C:
Chips bet on the layout R:
Rack – Chips in Players’ chip Rack A:
Attitude of the players P:
Presence of Pit Personnel S:
Streak of wins – a “Hot” shooter C:
Chips – Look for chips on the Box Numbers – the six boxes on each end
of the table containing the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10.
Players’ chips or bets on these numbers indicate their confidence in
the shooter. The presence of chips
may indicate a winning table; lack of chips a “cold” table.
R:
Rack – More importantly are players’ chips in their rack in front of
them. These chips could
indicate winnings, the sign of a positive trend.
The average player buy-in in a $5 game is about $100.
If you estimate more than $100 in their racks, this is a good sign. A:
Attitude – Players’ attitudes can tell you a lot about the table.
If you are a craps player, you have surely heard the players yelling and
even screaming with excitement in a hot game.
This is because they are winning. P:
Pit Personnel – Are the pit personnel involved in the game?
Is their attention on the payoffs? Is
there more than one casino person watching the action?
These are all good indicators of a winning game because house money is
flowing into the players’ chip racks and they want to insure that the dealers
make no mistakes. S:
Streak of Wins – many players bet up on wins, either pass line wins or
wins on the bets on the Box Numbers. This
phenomenon is easily observed by watching the players’ actions on the next
roll of the dice. Listen for these
code words or phrases from the players: “up
a unit,” “press,” “press my bet.” A
short message to readers trained in mathematics and/or statistics – you may be
asking how can a table trend positive or negative if the dice have no memory and
every roll is independent of the last? It
is not my intent here to convince you that I am right or you are wrong.
I ask you to keep an open mind on the topic, and consider how Tip 3,
below, might apply to the topic of “hot craps tables.”
I also recommend that you evaluate a few tables on your next trip to the
casinos before you reach a conclusion. Tip
5: Dice Control The
definition of dice control is (1) Setting the dice to move the losing sevens to
the inside and outside faces, (2) Gripping the dice in a prescribed manner, and
(3) Throwing the dice so they fly side by side through their orbit, at the same
rate of speed, land softly, tap the back wall as required by the casino, and
then gently repel with a higher probability of coming to rest on a winning
number while avoiding the losing 7. The
objective of dice control is to avoid the losing 7 for as long as possible in
the “Game 2” point cycle, thus continuing to win your pass line and come
bets. It
may sound difficult but learning programs are available including PARR – the
original dice control course developed by “Sharpshooter” and me way back in
1996 (over 1,400 graduates). You
can compare dice control to any sport requiring muscle memory and the
development of a skill like golf, for example.
The difference between dice control skills and sports skills, however, is
that once you learn the rudiments, it does not take as long to develop the
skill. Some gamblers pick it up
quickly; others require a few hours of practice.
Just like golf or bowling, continuing practice is required to maintain
the skill. Dice
Control Tip A: How to find a
Shooter Who Controls the Dice You
can score big with dice control by keeping your eyes open for a shooter with a
controlled throw – one who sets the dice with certain numbers on the top and
throws with the same form and motion each time.
You may be betting on a shooter with dice control skills and an edge over
the house! The
keys are same form and same motion on each toss.
Evaluate shooters with these characteristics very carefully; it’s
possible that one could generate some huge wins for you!
Dice
Control Tip B: Watch out for “Chicken Feeders”
Watch
out for shooters who set the dice very carefully and then fling them down the
table with the dice landing randomly. These
are not controlled shooters. Dice
controllers refer to them as “Chicken Feeders.” Since
the publication of Casino Gambling in 2000, it has become an accepted
fact that players possessing the skill of dice control can actually turn the
tables and gain an edge over the casinos! Casino
Gambling contains six chapters on craps and dice control.
The
fascinating story of dice control and how it was developed and proven begins on
Page 109. If you’re interested in the mathematical proof of dice control, you will find it in Chapter 11: Calculating the Player Advantage for Craps. Links to other Decisions Leading to Winning Sessions: q
